Gingivitis is the first stage of periodontal disorder characterized by bleeding, inflamed or swollen gums. A timely diagnosis of gingivitis can fully reverse its effects and restore the health and structure of the gums. Gingivitis does not damage the bone tissue.
If left untreated, gingivitis produces and breeds oral bacteria that destroys ligaments and bone structure. In the periodontitis stage, minor to moderate bone loss takes place along with bleeding gums, gum recession, and halitosis.
Advanced stage periodontitis causes severe bone loss, tooth loss, gum recession, and instability in the teeth structure. Advanced periodontitis is also associated with other medical issues, including heart diseases, strokes, and cancer.
